Though Christmas puds are usually made weeks before the big day, with the right recipe, it’s not too late to create a showstopper to round off your meal…
We asked Nick and Ian at north London grocer Melrose & Morgan for advice on the crafting the perfect pud. They say: “There is something enormously satisfying about making your own plum pudding. We are always asked the secret to getting it perfectly moist but not too gooey. We use butter instead of vegetable suet and this gives a more luxurious texture. The prunes marry well with the brandy. Every Christmas pudding needs a good kick of booze. It’s Christmas after all.”

MELROSE & MORGAN, FESTIVE APERITIF HAMPER
We are huge fans of Melrose and Morgan - especially at Christmas. From their deliciously moreish Parmesan and Poppyseed Rounds, to their perfect mince pies, every item in this gift box is a winner. We are anticipating lots of nights in during the coming party season, and luckily this hamper contains everything you need for a night in with Netflix – Coste Piane Prosecco Valdobbiadene, a jar of Harissa Spiced Nuts, Mince pies and Parmesan and those Poppyseed Rounds.
Mince Pies are great to have in the cupboard for impromptu Christmas puddings and tea times, but the supermarket ones, can be cloyingly sweet. Independent deli Melrose and Morgan's has a great taste Awards star and did well in our taste too - plus the packaging is bold and stylish.
MELROSE AND MORGAN SEA SALT CARAMEL TRUFFLES
Awarded one gold star at the Great Taste Awards 2021, these delicious dark chocolate caramels would make for a mouthwatering Christmas Day treat.
MELROSE AND MORGAN TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
A quite magnificent hamper from Melrose & Morgan, and one you’d have to be pretty committed to if you were to get through it all in the advertised 12 days. Where to start? Maybe the coffee dusted chocolate hazelnuts? Or perhaps the tin of artisan crackers with a generous slab of Keen’s cheddar and Secret Smokehouse smoked salmon? Then there’s the six hand-picked bottles of wine, Michael Gonet 3 Terriors NV champagne, and Melrose & Morgan’s own mulled wine syrup. And we’re not even halfway there. Like we said, where to start?
FESTIVE HAMPERS
For the ultimate luxury, the 12 days of Christmas Hamper will take you on a food journey like no other. Packed with the most delicious handmade artisan produce with the finest Champagne, chocolate and gourmet treats.
MELROSE AND MORGAN MINCE PIES
While most mince pies pride themselves on a rich and moist mincemeat, Melrose and Morgan are all about the pastry. These are glossy and buttery with a hint of vanilla, every bit as indulgent as the spiced filling of apples, raisins, sultanas, currants and citrus peel, offset with a glug of brandy. Not teeny tiny, but not massive either, these elegant mince pies are just a bit over bitesize, leaving you wanting more but never making you feel like you’ve stuffed yourself to bursting. Though we suppose that depends on how many you plan on putting away in a single session...
SEA SALTED CARAMEL TRUFFLES
Smooth salted caramel and dark chocolate is a timeless combo, and these classic truffles don’t disappoint.
Melrose and Morgan's 12 Days of Christmas Hamper
Offering a mix of the very best the UK and Europe has to offer for all things edible, this gourmet hamper brings all the most festive ingredients together in one mouthwatering combination.
MELROSE AND MORGAN MINCE PIES, BOX OF SIX
If you’ve been tasked with bringing the mince pies to your Christmas drinks party, these from London-based bakery, Melrose and Morgan, are the only ones to take. Don’t just take our word for it either – they have won a Great Taste award too. The pasty is thick and oh-so buttery, without being crumbly, while the mince is handmade. All in all, they’ll go down a storm, so we’d recommend buying in bulk.
The site also very helpfully says if you’re buying them for Christmas day, don’t order before 1 December, so they’re as fresh as can be. And while you’re there, the bakery also offers up plenty of other great bits, like brandy butter and dark chocolate-covered candied orange slices.

Melrose and Morgan The Festive Gourmand
Melrose and Morgan’s colour-pop tins and packaging will brighten up even the darkest December day. At £295 for 19 items, it was one of the more premium options tested, but the products were of undeniably high quality, with standouts including the decadent dark chocolate florentines, artisan cheese crackers and rose harissa roasted nuts (which, as a word of warning from our testers, are dangerously addictive).
At £295 for 19 items, Melrose and Morgan’s hamper was one of the more premium options tested, but there are plenty of options to suit all budgets, including its Festive Afternoon Tea (£50) and Festive Aperitif Hamper (£75).
The contents were undeniably delicious, with particular highlights being the buttery Winslade cheese (great greedily slathered on crackers with a dollop of fig chutney), while the decadent dark chocolate florentines went down a storm – especially with a freshly brewed cup of coffee.
