Karma is a lovely tiny Jewish bakery on South End Road which does killer challah. I’m from Hungary and I hadn’t had challah like that since I moved away 23 years ago. It’s a special gem.

Artichoke on England’s Lane sells the most amazing fruit and vegetables. For meat or cheese, I’ll go to the Hampstead Butcher.

There’s a great wine shop that’s opened on our end of Hampstead High Street called Amathus Drinks. They’re so knowledgeable. You’ll ask for a rosé and they’ll open a few bottles and get you tasting.

Melrose and Morgan is another lovely deli with outposts in Primrose Hill and Hampstead.

This mini-chain of north London delis has a serious USP: an extensive house range of groceries made in small batches from mostly British ingredients. This small wonderland is an "ongoing restoration project" from partners Ian James and Nick Selby (of north London's cult Melrose and Morgan delis; Alan Bennett in the foreword to their book, Good Food for Your Table - available at the on-site shop, folks - repeats its joke reputation as "Prada for the larder"). They call themselves custodians, not owners. Once inside the walled gardens, the restaurant turns out to be an open kitchen housed in sea containers, some chic garden furniture and a vast, snowy open-sided canvas sail by way of weatherproofing. (Come winter, it relocates to one of the conservatories: Pelargonium House, I think.) It seems to have grown as organically out of the landscape as the fat, knobbly produce on sale at the shop.
